How To Scrap Silver Plate, and Recycling old Silver Plated Items

To contact us Click HERE
The price of silver is going up, up, up! The first thing you expected to happen, has: The silver pieces you have been picking up at garage sales and thrift shops are harder to find. Things are still around of course... But what is left sitting out is the silver plated stuff...

Silver plated items have been gong up in value... But surprisingly, its not because silver is going up in value. Its actually because copper is going up in value.

Thats right, folks. Silver plate is usually a Copper alloy base. When people hear this, they are often taken aback... Well then, why is it white? Well that brings me to my second major point. Silver plate is also often a Nickel alloy base. So to summarize, silver plate is a mixture of Nickel and Copper, two of the most expensive metals in the scrap base metal recycling industry.

So what are the different types of silver plate?

  • Pure Copper Base: This is easy to spot. hit it with a file, or hit it with a grinder really quick, and when you see that beautiful copper color, you'll know. When you come across a piece of plated silverware or something of that nature, it will usually NOT be pure copper under the silver plate because copper is too weak to be used as a utensil. It would bend and deflect too easily.
  • Cupronickel: is an alloy or copper and nickel, and is german for coppernickel. (creative, I know.) Cupronickel comes in all sorts of alloys, and all types of values. 90/10 curponickel (90% copper and 10% nickel) is the most valuable but rarely found. 70/30 cupronickel is worth less, but considerably easier to find. I often find 70/30 cupronickel, and many times silver imitation (not plated) is 70/30 cupronickel. Many yards will have a separate list of cupronickel prices (often worth more than copper), and other yards buy it at brass price.
  • German Silver: This is an uglier version of cupronickel, containing copper nickel, and zinc. Usually in a mixture of 60, 20, 20 respectively. This is worth brass price.
  • Pure Nickel: Very rarely seen in anything modern, but more often found in old silver plated pieces. Honestly, if you find a pure nickel silver plated piece, it is likely worth much more as an antique then as scrap.

I hope you see this as an opportunity to make some money! Usually you will need to buy some of this stuff in bulk to feel like you are getting any sort of deal. Some places, like garage sales and thrift stores, will often have this type of stuff all over the place.

How To Get Scrap Business Referrals

To contact us Click HERE

The scrap metal game is getting tough. Everybody knows the value of scrap.  People are even saving up scrap pennies! So what can you do to find more business? Make it personal!
People love to hire those that are recommended by their friends. Especially for simple things like picking up some scrap metal. So what can you do as a business to open yourself up to possible referrals?
Here are some simple ideas:
1. Be friendly, knowledgable, and tell the truth; Always.
The first part of being successful is having a sustainable business model. Yes, being a real jerk may seem like it works, but it will not, and cannot, work in the long term. (See 2007 financial crisis.) The key to being a relentless and powerful entrepreneur, is to actually be a knowledgable and scrupulous businessman.  Please consider making your business a green business.
2. If something is not worth your time, or can easily be taken care of by a casual homeowner, explain to them what to do! Send them a few business cards later on in the week, and they will think highly of you.
To get respect, you must give respect. Those that demand respect, but give none, will be lost.
With that in mind, let me tell you a story. About 5 years ago, I was having a very hard time with my personal PC. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. It just started shutting down without warning. I was 100% certain that it was software related, and therefore never bothered to take it apart. I called around to several repair shops, and they told me to bring it in. They all quoted at least $25 fees just for bringing it in.
But, one if the guys I called had an entirely different attitude. He very quickly diagnosed the problem, saying that my CPU was overheating. He said, "probably because of dirt build up. " He said I could bring it in and he could clean the thing up, or he said "Just take a vacuum cleaner, and gently collect all dust around the CPU."
I was amazed. When I opened the case, there was a giant wad of dust all over CPU. I cleaned it up and it worked fine. The next year when I installed all new computers in my shop office, I hired that guy to do the installation and servicing to everything, and he has been my go-to guy whenever I need any work done. And yes, I recommend him whenever possible.
3. Hold promotions! When somebody contacts you, tell them about a recent promotion!
Promotions are not limited to car dealerships and supermarkets. You can hold a promotion too! This means putting things like movie tickets, or gift cards up for grabs for your customers. Maybe hold a lotto at the end of the month to see who gets the prizes, ect. Then, when you go to deliver the prizes, possibly have a little chat and offer the person some business cards, ect.
The more that your customer likes you, the more they will want to sell you to their friends later.
4. Never burn bridges.
When you are looking to win the future support of your customers, the last thing you want to do is create a future enemy. These will be the people who go out of their way to slander and destroy you!  This advice can be expanded into your daily life as well. I have made this mistake before, and it only causes problems for you in the future.
5. Discuss referrals with your customer, and always leave business cards.
The business cards are a must have! Be sure you have plenty and hand them out to everybody. Upon closing a job, give your customer a business card, and ask them to refer you to other people, friends, ect.  This type of professionalism is respected and appreciated.

The real reason you want referrals, is because you want more work. Make sure you get your business strategy and have a easily recognizable name. These things, along with dedication and hard work, will put your business at the top!http://scrapmetaljunkie.com

The Importance of Being a Sustainable Green Business

To contact us Click HERE
"Green" and "sustainable" are two of the biggest buzz words of the past ten years. Why? Because people want to do business with those who are efficient, self-sufficient, and revolutionary. That means knowing How To Recycle Scrap Metal.

The problem is, many business owners don't really know or care about being green or sustainable... But almost all business owners underestimate how much of a money saver it really can be.

Let me be anecdotal:
Many people are familiar with the company 1800-GOT-JUNK? This Canadian founded company, as of right now, is donating or recycling about 60% of the things they pick up.
To their customers, this is a obvious sign of their commitment to keep the environment clean, and help out the community. It is one of the reasons the company is so respected.
But, it is also why the company is so profitable. All of the money they make from selling their recyclables is not only profit, but they also have far cheaper landfill overhead. On top of that, any thing that CAN be donated, WILL be donated, as the donated goods contribute to tax write-offs, keeping the company even more profitable!

No matter what type of business you run, please keep the financial part of sustainability in your mind, even if you don't care about the environment. The truth is, any costs associated with becoming more sustainable, for the most part will eventually pay for themselves, and then become profit.

For example, buying and installing a wind turbine or a solar panel will cost you up to $30000. But, federal and/or state incentives may pay for up to half of this. Any energy that you don't use can be sold back to power companies for PROFIT. For every megawatt-hour you produce, you get a renewable energy Credit (REC), which can be sold to businesses to off set their carbon footprint, effectively making environmentalism a tradable commodity! Plus, you don't have to pay for all the energy you are saving!

Energy conservative windows are the same deal, ect...

Do you donate everything you can? Do you recycle everything you can? Things like plastic, paper, and wood? Remember, everything made of materials, has worth as a second hand commodity.

Now, you apply sustainability directly to your business! Small changes every month or two become major differences in a few years.

Good Luck!http://scrapmetaljunkie.com
